A single image
I make single images that often contain a strong current of movement. They can seem like individual frames from a video, but I just can’t bring myself to make any moving images. In fact, I once woke up really stressed by a dream in which I was being told to shoot a video. I couldn’t even begin to imagine how I’d get started.
I've had a camera in hand off and on since 1976. Framing just one moment has always called out to me as the challenging and interesting thing. Back inna day, I loved the roll of film, daring me to find one shot in 35 on the roll that would work, and then taking it to the darkroom, with all it's lovely smells. Nowadays Photoshop and Lightroom are limitless tools that open countless possibilities, and the possibility of transforming that frozen image of something real into the abstract or surreal is just an imagination away. And it is still the most important thing.
For many years, I have identified as a Pediatric Emergency doc. The most FAQ for most people, on hearing this, is "Omigod isn't that stressful!" Well of course it is. Occasionally. But mostly it's been a rewarding mix of problems solved, hearts and minds comforted. It's been a chance to work through an endless variety of problems - which is also the most important thing.
Art, specifically creating art, specifically with a still camera, had always been an itch I only rarely scratched. Until a couple of years ago when I allowed that it was just as much a calling as medicine. The calls came differently. Becoming a doctor had the impetus of meeting parental expectations,. Choosing to take time to see the kind of art I could create had the inevitability of a prophecy. It was always what I was going to do. I just had to accept there would be fewer markings along the path.
